about us!

Hello and welcome!

My name is Teresa and my husband is John.  We have been married for over 20 years and we have 7 wonderful adopted Special Needs Children and Adults.  We adopted twin boys when they were 6 and they are now 26.   When we adopted them we learned how cruel the world can be. They were made fun of because of their delays.  We tired to find them activities to do so they could make friends and we could not find any.  Either they were too old , too young, or mentally did not fit in. So my husband and I

decided to become Leaders of the Boyscouts of America and started our own Unit for Children or Young Adults with disablities.  Unofficially we had girls as well as boys.  They all got to participate and earn badges and have fun. We later adopted a girl and she was also part of our Scouts.    My husband changed jobs so we moved quite a bit . Everywhere we ended up we found the same problem , so we continued with starting another Scouting group for the disabled.   John's work finally brought him here to NC and once again we did the scouting thing so that our kids could have friends and have fun and not be made fun of.

Johns job ended once again and we thought we were moving our of the area so we finally quit Scouting.  We did adopt younger kids again and wanted them to have something to do as well.   Once John retired , he is now disabled and we knew we were going to be staying here , we decided our kids needed an activity and opportunities to make friends in a safe Bully free environment.  This time because of the restraints , rules and cost we decided to go private.  Not do scouting anymore.  We still do the same type of activities we are just not part of any other group.

About 8 years ago we approached Pastor Charles McGathy at First Baptist Church in Madison, and had asked if they would let us use the church for our Scout meetings. The Church welcomed us with open arms and treated us as family.  So when we decided to start our new group Feb 2018 , it was obvious where we would want to meet.  Once again the Church graciously took us in as one of their ministries.

So you are probably wondering what do we do .  We try to provide the, Kids, Adults , Parents, Caregivers and Families a place where they can come and feel safe.  They can be themselves.  The Parents and Caregivers can give each other support and suggestions . We not only become friends we become part of an extended family .   We try to be there for each other and we care about each others kids as well.   We do require a caring adult stay with to help as needed and also allow no Special Needs Siblings to attend and have fun as well. Sometimes it is really hard on them having special needs brothers and sisters because sometimes they can not go to typical events due to the Special needs of the siblings.  We try to mofify everythign so that all can do it , have fun and succeed.

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope that you will come and join our Special Family!
